Lorelei B&B sits just moments from the town centre, in an elegant Federation‑style residence built in 1914 for Dr Sleeman, a well‑known Portland figure of the era. For more than 25 years the property has welcomed travellers as a traditional Bed and Breakfast, and I have had the privilege of owning and hosting it for over two decades.
Guests arrive through the reception area, framed by original leadlight windows depicting magpies and a kookaburra—beautiful reminders of the home’s century‑old craftsmanship. From here, two generous communal rooms extend from the foyer.
The Dining Room offers complimentary refreshments at any hour, and breakfast is served daily from 7:30 to 9:30 am. On crisp winter mornings, the HeatCharm log fire creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Breakfast includes a selection of cereals, fruits, yoghurts, toast, juices, teas and coffee, with a freshly cooked breakfast also available during service hours, all included in the price of your stay.
The second shared space, the Guest Lounge, is open at all times and provides a comfortable place to unwind, with a large box‑bay window and an open fireplace. In the evenings, guests are welcome to make use of the Honesty Bar, offering a quiet and relaxed way to enjoy a drink at their leisure.
A central hallway leads from Reception to the guest rooms on the north and west sides of the house. Each room, ranging from 30 to 40 square metres, features a private ensuite with both bath and shower, a queen‑size bed, comfortable seating and remote‑controlled heating and cooling. High‑speed complimentary Wi‑Fi is available throughout the property, allowing guests to stream their preferred services on the in‑room TV or connect their personal devices with ease.
Lorelei sits on nearly 1,600 square metres of land, with a dedicated garden and a spacious covered veranda furnished for guest use—perfect for enjoying Portland’s mild coastal evenings.
Portland and its surrounds offer a remarkable variety of experiences—from dramatic coastlines and native forests to easy day trips to regional attractions, including the UNESCO‑listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape. Lorelei’s location provides the ideal balance of tranquillity and convenience: set away from busy roads yet within walking distance of local shops, cafés and attractions.
Since 2004, I have been proud to call this historic house—and the beautiful southwest coast of Victoria—my home. My aim is to ensure your stay at Lorelei B&B is both comfortable and memorable. I live on‑site in the owner’s quarters and am generally available to assist with anything you may need during your visit.
